The Union Flag - National Flag of The UK

The Union Flag is probably the best known flag flying around the world. The first version was created in 1606 and combined the flags of England and Scotland and than in 1801 the St Patrick’s Cross of Ireland was added. The Union Flag is the National flag by custom and by practice not by statute. There is no Flag Act in UK law.

The Union Flag is the flag of Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories and forms part of many flags of Commonwealth Countries. It also features in the flags of the Armed Services and the Merchant Marine. Flags may be flown on every day of the year and the Government is encouraging local authorities and the general public to make sure that they observe tradition and fly the flag with pride.

When British National flags are flown alongside the flags of other nations, care should be taken that each flag is the same size and that each flag is being flown from its own flagpole. The Union Flag should be raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. It should never be allowed to touch the ground except in ceremony.
